Emery Miles, Composer
Full bio:
Emery Miles is a composer of experimental music whose work combines modern
compositional techniques with a unique sense of aesthetics. Their work as a composer is
primarily concerned with constructing novel sound worlds that draw the listener in and lead
them to new cognitive and emotional experiences. Emery brings together an eclectic mix of
inspirations to form a personalized language for musical communication.
Born in 1999, Emery has been exploring and writing music from a young age. It wasn’t until
their senior year of high school, however, that they decided to seriously pursue music
composition. Emery’s education at Ball State has been instrumental in developing their
personal compositional voice by exposing them to the cutting edge of the modern
compositional landscape and always pushing them to explore new avenues of self
expression.
At Ball State, Emery has had compositions performed on several student composers forums,
New Music Ensemble concerts, and EM (electronic music) concerts. Their string quintet, Kingslayer, was sight read by critically acclaimed string quintet Sybarite Five. They served in a leadership role in the Ball State SCI chapter from Fall 2019 to Spring 2021, performed with the New Music Ensemble from Fall 2018 to Spring 2021, and performed with the Electroacoustic Ensemble from Fall 2020 to Spring 2021. Their composition teachers at Ball State have included Dr. Amelia Kaplan, Dr. Eleanor Trawick, Dr. Daniel Swilley, and Dr. Chin Ting Chan. They graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's in music composition in Spring 2021, and received the Academic Honors in Writing award for the school of music.
Emery is currently pursuing a Master's in Music Composition at the University of Louisville, where they have studied with Dr. Marc Satterwhite and Dr. Allison Ogden. During the Fall Semester of 2021 they participated in the CubeLab workshop with Hypercube Ensemble, writing a composition for acoustic guitar and tenor saxophone.
Aside from music, Emery’s hobbies include cooking, poetry, and rollerblading.
